Finnegan-isms

Lately, my funny little Valentine has turned into quite a ham without meaning to at all.  Case in point, two weeks ago, I walked into his room when he woke up from nap and gave him books just like always.  When nap time was over and I went back to get him, I found that he had lined up most of his animals in front of him.  After running to get my camera and sneaking back in, I saw him reading Curious George to his animals.  He was leaned up against one side of the crib, and they the other.  They looked to be paying very close attention.  When he saw me standing there, he declared, "Mama, I readin' monkey book to my animals (pronounced aa-mals)."

He started to get up when I tried to take a picture from the front, but you get the general idea.  I think what I like best, other than the ridiculously cute idea that he is reading to his animals, is that he is facing them as though he is their teacher.  When we read to him, we either lay beside one another or he sits in our lap, so I find it pretty clever that he thought he would read to them in this fashion.

This next one's a bit blurry as I took it with my phone.  He was so excited to ride the train for the first time when we took him on the T to Boston.  He spent most of the ride into the city on his knees looking out the window, ooh-ing and aw-ing at all the "right spots" and declaring to any and all passengers when all of the tunnels were coming up.  On the way back, however, he was pretty tired out and fell asleep sitting in the sunshine, lulled by the rhythm of the train.  This one's called, "Little Kitty Visits the Big City."

Last week we took our little polar bear to pick up this month's installment of our winter share.  He happily rode beside the bok choy after sitting atop most of the root vegetables. He is always so proud when we go to the farm.  He points out all of the palmers (tractors) to anyone who will listen and collects rocks in his pockets.

Finnegan also thinks that our cats are his friends and his playmates.  Seen here is Zephyr, admittedly not his favorite of the two, but a good companion nonetheless.  She sits beneath his seat at mealtimes as though she is a dog, yet has no guilt in sleeping on top of the table when she thinks that no one is looking.  Of the two, she lets him pet her the least, though they are both smart enough to tolerate any "loving" he offers and to never protest other than a verbal complaint here or there.

Finnegan asks them to read stories to him, to play trains with him, to sit beside him on the couch or bed, to go for a car ride with him, to put on their hats (they don't actually own hats, but don't tell Finn that).  He wants them to sing with him, to go down his slide with him, and he even offers them snacks at snack time.
Cosmo, not seen here, is his best pal and often tries to sneak into his room at nap time.  Today I heard her over the monitor and I had to kick her out twice.  She loves his attention though, even if it is just having her tail pulled.  He calls her "my Tosmo."
And lastly, his true best friend, "Eener."  Peter Rabbit and he go way back, as in they met on the day Finnegan was born.  My little sister brought him to the hospital and Finnegan has been smitten since.  Eener goes everywhere and is shoved in backpacks, dragged around by his ears, or his jacket sleeve, and generally smooshed each and every night.  As a result of this friendship, all rabbits everywhere are called Eeners.

Each age just seems to be so much more fun than the last with him, and I love that he has such a sense of humor now and that he laughs at books and things that he thinks are very funny.  I love that one of his favorite songs is "Summer Love" by Justin Timberlake and that he simply asks for Justin when he wants it played.  He has funny names for so many things and quirky ways of doing things that totally work for him.  Tonight I asked him how old his daddy would be tomorrow and he looked right at Jon and said, "Daddy a old man."  Of course, this is something I would have repeated all day in hopes of Finn saying it when Jon got home, had I thought of it, of course.  But somehow it's so much sweeter with him coming up with it himself.

New Year's Day Traditions

When you're younger, you don't really notice traditions as much.  Sure, they are there, and some of them might strike you as the things that you always do, but you don't necessarily value them as traditions at the time.  As you age, so does your perception of events and rituals.

For example, when I was younger, New Year's Day came with the tradition of bowling.  Every year that they had us for New Year's Day, my dad and stepmother would take the four of us bowling.  It was a fun thing to do at the time, but I don't know that I ever thought of it as our tradition.  Looking back, I'm glad we did it and I know that it's something I want to do with Finnegan.  Jon and I decided there was no time to start like the present and thus, began our New Year's Day tradition of bowling on the 1st.

A cute video of him pushing his ball down the ramp is on my Facebook page.  Finn seemed to have a good time bowling in the new year and we will definitely be back again next year.

Westhampton Pumpkin Roll

I was told by a friend that the pumpkin roll in Westhampton was not to be missed.  I'd never heard of it, but we went to the festival and Finnegan really enjoyed petting piglets, baby llamas, seeing peacocks, feeding cows, boccing at chickens.  He also really liked using the old fashioned-corn shucker to take the kernels off of feed corn.  The older gentlemen running the station really seemed to like that the kids were doing all of the work for them and so no one minded that Finn had, oh, five or six turns.
Right before the pumpkin roll, we left the festival and headed towards our car, waiting for the action.  It was a little disappointing initially as they staggered starting times this year and so you'd see a few pumpkins at a time rolling down the hill and then wait thirty seconds or so for another few to come.  At one point though, we had to leap out of the way as they continuously hopped the curb we were standing on and flew into the air to either split, or to smash upon impact.  It was pretty cool and I can definitely see us there in future years, tearing down the hill after Finnegan.

Finnegan's 2nd Birthday!

Finnegan's birthday fell on a Thursday this year and I planned to spend the day doing the things he likes.  I asked him what he wanted for breakfast and he asked for "dip-dips."  For all of those not fluent in Finneganese this means pancakes that he can dip in syrup.  His wish was my command and we went from there.  I had planned a fun morning at the park, but Finnegan decided that we should stay inside to play with his new gift; a baby and a stroller.  His butt spent more time in the stroller than his doll's did that day, and he didn't want to go any where or do anything because he didn't want to leave his baby or his stroller.  Still, he had a blast laughing his high pitched laugh he has when he is fully immersed in pretend play and feeding his baby all morning.  When Jon came home we celebrated with almond cake and an Elmo spoon and fork which really made the kid's entire afternoon.  What can we say, he's easy to please.  He's also an icing fiend and ate mostly frosting for his snack.  I can't say I really blame him; I love this chocolate fudge frosting and am always looking for occasions to make it.
On Saturday, we celebrated his birthday with family and friends and Finn did such a great job.  I really expected a melt down or two with all of the different people in his face and playing with all of his toys.  Instead, he was laughing and in a good mood all day, allowing people to hold him and cousins to push, pull, and carry him anywhere and everywhere.

Finnegan is fairly obsessed with trains these days.  He begs for the train at the local park (which is now closed for the season, and thus a tough subject when he asks), he insists upon wearing only his "choo choo coat," even though it's getting really cold here and it's just a cotton hoodie.  Note to self: invest in a down vest for Finn.  Jon took charge of making decorations for outside and we used the banner I made last year for his big day.  The favors were conductor hats, handkerchiefs, and whistles.  (Here's a random aside, what an odd word handkerchief really is.)  The train we made for the food was an easy idea, but surprisingly difficult to put into action.

Below Finnegan was reading a book with his memere, but he jumped off the couch at the sound of Drew's voice (see little boy in black skeleton shirt) and ran to greet him.  The party, for Finn, began at that moment.  It became more exciting as more friends arrived, and Anny happily tried out his new doll stroller for him.

My sister-in-law made Elmo and Cookie Monster cake balls, or Elbow and Cookie as they're known round these parts, for Finnegan's party guests.  They were so cute and looked extremely labor-intensive.  She sort of deserved a medal for these.
I'm sad this is blurry, but still glad to see his little cheeks puffed out and his little curls peeking from underneath his cap.

 The niece express!
 The nephews.
Several of my family members, braving the chilly afternoon for Finn's party.

Finnegan wasn't happy to be sitting on my lap as I had grabbed him from his lawn mowing for the moment. As you can see, Drew had also been mowing the lawn with him and needed the mower in the picture.  I think Anny may be flirting with Drew. :)  Still, here we all are: these two amazing women that I met when Finn was just two months old.  They make me a better mom and I'm truly blessed to have so many great mom friends with whom to share the moments, the worries, and the triumphs.  I'm so glad to have celebrated my little boy who just turned two, but also to celebrate Jon and myself as we are celebrating two years as parents, as a trio, as a family.
