I finally felt the baby kick! Huzzah!

It may have occurred before but if it did I missed it in not knowing what to look for. I felt him for the first time on Thursday but yesterday and today he's been very active now that I know what the feeling is.

I've never been the type of girl to be excited about kicking, but this is pretty darn cool...
Last Saturday we had a bunch of friends and family over to celebrate my 30th birthday with an 80s theme party. This is the only picture in which Jon and I look somewhat normal so though I am not a huge fan, I will make it my first official image on blogspot. I know I seem like a horrible wife but this picture of Jon with his tongue out is actually better than the one of him smiling.
I am still impressed with his mohawk which I teased about for weeks and he actually let me do the day of. I think Carmen could have done a better job, being a hairdresser and all, but it still looked cool from the front.
Genevieve found a very cool "Make Art, Not War" shirt at Forever 21 and jelly shoes tucked away in the back of her closet. They even looked rather punk rock with the twisty tie keeping them together.

Though it's rather blurry I really like this shot of me and Corinne. Too bad her pink fishnet gloves with a pinky and thumb hole weren't in the picture...but if you look closely I think you can see her shoulder pads. She and Jon's mom were the only ones to attempt to pull those off!
In the photo below Carmen rocked neon green like none other and I was personally jealous of the black lace gloves which showed off her green slap bracelet perfectly. All-in-all I had a blast though I'm sad to report I have very few pictures of my bright blue sneakers and neon pink leg warmers. :) Jon bought me a very yummy cake from La Fiorentina and we had a lot of Pixie-Sticks, Lik Em Aid, and Ring Pops as we sang along to 80s tunes, played a trivia game and watched The Goonies.

Five things I've done today to procrastinate:

1. Make the decision that much of this blog should be done in lists, as I would blog with more frequency if it were.

2. Make butter pecan cupcakes with almond buttercream frosting. Yes, they are as delicious as they sound.

3. Frost said cupcakes with my pastry bag attachment so that they look professional. This deserves a number all its own because although they look really great, it definitely takes a lot longer than spreading with a knife.

4. Went through one of our book cases to find books to donate. I am normally a firm believer in keeping all of your books, however, we have many book shelves and they are all full. When we moved into this house we ordered four amazing book shelves, hand-crafted just for us and they are all overly full of volumes I know I'll never read again. So today I began the selection process...in the pile as of this moment:

  • any Shakespeare play I own in paperback--I feel justified in this as I own the entire anthology from college and I don't actually teach any plays other than Macbeth. If I were to ever have a class of seniors at my high school (which I actually don't want), I would also teach Hamlet but I have both of those in this really great edition for teaching, so I am all set.
  • Heart of Darkness--oh, how I loathe thee. You weren't the first in the discard pile, but had I been thinking ahead, you would have been. I did not enjoy that book at all.
  • Love in the Time of Cholera--or might I say, book which took me forever to read. Marquez's syntax is so thick and convoluted it took a ridiculously long time to get through this book, and I really wanted to read it. Although I liked the actual book, I know I'll never read it again.
  • Several Dover thrift editions of books I already own--I have no idea why I need three or four copies of the same book. I have a few multiple volumes, but only of books that are mine and my dad's old copies or my nanny's.

5. Harvesting and plowing "My Farm" application on facebook--what a waste of time. It is a glorious way to procrastinate. This list and post haven't been too shabby either.

Top Five Weekend Moments:
1. Seeing the WWI Propaganda Posters on display at the Norman Rockwell museum--so, so good!
2. Having two very distinct I-am-woman-hear-me-roar moments...and enjoying them by myself. No kudos needed.
3. Hot pink toenails--pedicures are important in the winter months as well.
4. A nonfat white mocha from Starbucks...I feel this honestly could have a spot on nearly any top five list.
5. Wearing my favorite black velvet blazer today--it was a little cold for it, but I had to go for it anyway as it is literally my favorite "coat" to wear.

"The time is always right to do what is right."

Dear Blogspot,

Reason #341 why I love my town:

Yesterday I was walking through downtown and I passed a group of 15-20 older women. They were singing carols, but the words were changed to be about social issues. The banner they held in front of them read, "The Raging Grannies sing for Peace and Justice."

I just know if my Nanny Judson were still here she would have been out there singing along with her pea coat and rubber boots.

Happy and Content on a very blizzard-like evening

Dear Blogspot,

It is so cold. We have the heat on and I am still chilly. Wool socks, sweats, a thermal shirt--still cold.

I even stopped on my way home to get a white mocha at Starbucks. Pure deliciousness. It warmed me for thirty minutes or so...but eventually I was cold once again. Sticking with the white mocha for a moment though, it feels like liquid Christmas to me. Odd, I know, but there is something about the cheery red Starbucks cup and yummy coffee that you normally don't indulge in. It's perfect as you walk along the snowy sidewalks--you just start thinking about how very holiday-esque the whole scenario is.

I am glad to have ended my day in this way as it began with a wee bit of annoyance at using four-wheel drive to get to the highway since Northampton had a two hour delay but Springfield had no delay at all. Not cool I tell you.

A thought taking up residence in my mind: for work I have to blog about discussion questions and articles regarding technology. One of the questions was about the actual practice of blogging. I replied that I think it can be beneficial for online class discussions as long as safety precautions are taken, and then also discussed the more practical, social uses. I also admitted to having blogged a time or two (I used to be an avid livejournaler). The next teacher to comment let her true feelings be known when she essentially called the practice and anyone who blogs at all, self-indulgent, egotistical whiners of generation-pay-attention-to-me. Sheesh, tell us what you really think. Aside: I love that I am blogging about how much she hates blogging, and of course, being incredibly self-indulgent. Honestly though, if you don't indulge yourself every now and then, who will? Isn't that the basis of the term? Plus, if you don't want to read what someone writes/blogs, don't. It's as simple as that. It's rather hypocritical to claim the practice and all those who partake as egotistical and self-indulgent if you yourself are reading all of the blogs (and if you're not, then how do you really know if the blogger is being self-indulgent?). Even if you don't agree with any of this, it's harsh to be so negative-Nancy on the practice when you know several colleagues posted about benefits and admitting to blogging themselves. Eek.

On a brighter note, just one and half more days until my winter break of...drum roll, please...nearly three weeks begins! Woo-hoo! It may even be one day longer as an awful lot of snow is being predicted for Friday. How self-indulgent is this...bragging about my vacation? In your face, blogger world!

Dear Blogspot,

I love how I started this blog in November of 2008 and you (blogspot) say it was really October of 2007. Kind of lame...

Equally lame is the amount of rain we have been getting. I like rain more than most, but this is fairly scary rain because it causes unsafe driving conditions. Wow, I sound about 50 years old. Seriously though, I have a 35-40 minute commute on a major road and I don't like driving 65-70 mph in pouring-Lloyd-Dobbler-I-gave-her-my-heart-she-gave-me-a-pen-rain. I just don't.

On a different note and a more positive one, it does mean we can ignore the leaves for now and anything that allows that is truly a blessing.

Jon and I bought new cell phones today and decided to go with a new company as well. The phones are very cute and rather high tech--we are suddenly feeling a part of the times again. Even though I am feeling happy with our purchases, I think it's quite a racket the cell phone companies have going. You have to buy all of the parts and then the activation fees, etc. Too much money.

On the topic, I read an article this morning that stated Barack Obama's barber charges $21 for a haircut. Seriously? In what world does it cost $21 to cut a man's hair? The salon in town charges $10 and it's a cute place. What else do you get for your $21, I wonder? I also feel I must mention, this isn't some new 'fancy-pants' barber he has switched to since becoming elected. This is the same man he has been going to for years. Odd.
